Transponder keys are accessories made in the factory that come with a car and provide for radio transmission between the car and the key. This transmission allows for the key to be programmed to only start a specific car. Therefore, only the transponder key will be able to start the car and drive it. Transponder keys help to reduce the chances for car thieves to steal a car.
The way transponder key programming works involves a microchip that lives in the top of the key. This microchip has a serial number, which a transponder key programmer has made unique to that key. The electronic/engine control units (ECU) will send a request to the vehicle for it to validate the serial number. If the car doesn’t recognize any serial number within its programmed set of confirmed numbers, the car will not start.
When buying a vehicle in Denver that includes transponder keys, it's a good idea to have at least two keys. In many cases keys are lost, so having a spare programmed transponder key is important. If replacement transponder keys are needed, they can usually be made by a locksmith in Denver, Co.
Some transponder keys can be duplicated using writable transponder chips and reader/encoding hardware and software. Others have to be programmed into the processor to be functional. Some systems require using a 'learning key' to program additional keys.
