The most common problem found in a Ford Focus is, according complaints from Focus owners, after time the key won't turn in the ignition. This occurs on the Ford Focus, from model years 2000 through 2006.
Some have argued the ignition problems are a safety defect and should be recalled, because the possibility exists that the ignition defect could leave you stranded somewhere. However, so far there is no official recall. We have read several articles concerning the Ford Focus 2000 and the problem seems to be a defective ignition switch cylinder. The internet is full of disgruntled Focus owners who have suffered the inconvenience associated with this problem. In some cases, multiple failures of the ignition switch often times had left them stranded and, consequently, facing large towing and repair charges.
Since a family member recently experienced the same problem, I researched the Internet and spoke with several dealers and locksmiths about the problem. This led me to conclude that the failed cylinders resulted from a substandard manufactured lock cylinder. This cylinder rapidly deteriorates with use then fractures and jams.
Ford is well aware that these fragile lock cylinders are made of substandard materials, and that they are breaking and jamming at an alarming rate.
One locksmith I spoke with showed me 10 switches that he had recently replaced.I believe it is time for Ford to pick up the tab and correct an apparent oversight in quality control.
The best way to get this fixed is to call a locksmith. Most locksmiths are able to replace ignition locks. This repair should cost somewhere in the $200 range, versus $500 when the ignition is replaced at the dealership.
